How do I make my laptop recognize the external keyboard?

  • Ok, so my dog was laying in my lap and kicked my hand, which had a drink in it. The drink spilled a little on my laptop. Now my keyboard is messing up and types all kinds of letters when I try to use it. I took it to a computer repair shop, and long story short, I have a keyboard to connect to my laptop. When I plug the keyboard in, it lights up for a minute, but it will not type. Is there something I need to do to make the laptop recognize the keyboard or should I just try another keyboard? This one is kind of old. Thanks!

  • Try a USB keyboard - or a relacement keyboard for uour current laptop.

Electronics do not like soft drinks because they often contain acids that are conductive and theings get shorted out. The drink ,may have done more harm than just spoiling your keboard.

Get the dog to buy you a new laptop.

Do you have household insurance? This kind of thing should be covered under your insurance policy.

  • I never use the laptop keyboards (I can't stand them) so I've been plugging USB keyboards into my laptops since there's been USB. Never had to do anything to get the laptop to recognize the keyboard. Whether it's a cheap (like $3 brand new) keyboard, an expensive one or, like this one, a wireless keyboard going to the laptop through a KVM switch, they just work.

Make sure that the keyboard is good and the USB port on the laptop is good.
