How do I tell if my fish is a Boy or a Girl.?

  • Well, I know that in some species, the females are larger than the males and have a larger belly.

  • it depends on the fish. i have mollies and the female has 3 triangle fins on the underside of the body. The male has a triangle on the front underside and and an elongated fin directly behind it.

  • I'm not sure what fish you have but i know that with chichlids the males are bigger and usually more colorful

  • It depends on the type of fish.

Bettas males have the large flowing fins, females have shorter, and a little drabber.

Goldfish when large enough the females are stockier with a more rounded belly, males being slimmer.

    Similar to above for tetras.

Cichlids tend to have differences with finnage, as with gourami's.

Live bearers the female has a normal anal fin while the males is pointed and called a gonodium (sp)

Of course some fish can't be sexed unless you physically see them mating, obviously you can see the female laying/dropping eggs and the males spraying milt.

The list is fairly extensive but I've tried to cover the likely one you have.

  • its going to be very hard...

I just say that mine are whatever I want them to be, I have 2 of each kind of fish that I have so I say one is a girl and one is a boy even though I have no clue.

  • It depends on what fish it is. I just make up the gender (i don't know if my fish are very fond of that). We had a swordfish once, though, and there were big differences between them. It just depends.
