My lovebirds have been acting strange. They don't seem to like each other. What's going on?

  • I've only had them about a week -- we're still getting used to each other. They haven't even left the cage yet, and I have to whistle a lot when I'm near them but they seem to shift away from me anyway. We have a small cage, but tonight we're going to get a much larger one.
    Right no they share a water bowl and a food bowl, but if I need to get 2 other for themselves then I wouldn't mind.

    They've always been on the quiet side, although every now and then they seem to chirp happily, sometimes at random times. Today they've been doing it a lot. But they got into a fight, the bigger one, Gizzmo, tried biting the otehr and spread her wings so the other one, Clyde, had to get away.
    And while I was busy, my mom had them in her room. She said that one of them tried to open one of the doors repeatedly. When I came upt o her and opened the door myself, and put my hand in with my index finger out, they went to the other side of the cage.

    What's up with them?

  • If they werent bonded before you got them, they are likely not a true pair. People buy a pair of birds and assume they will bond, but quite often they dont...lovebirds are fussy, just like we are, when it comes to choosing their partners. People just assume they are a mated pair because they are "lovebirds" but it is often not the case.

    They are scared of you, thats why they go to the other side of the cage. You'll need to sit by their cage constantly for ages, chatting to them until they get used to you, if you want them to be tame. And they will try to escape...make sure the cage is secure.

  • Nothing is wrong with them... they're untamed and they don't trust you. So they want out of their cage, yes, but they don't want to step up on your finger in order to come out - with that they would rather stay in because they're afraid of you.

    I'd recommend target training them so they learn how to step up;

    You can also try the power pause technique if you just want to be able to touch them;

    A lot of work goes into these types of birds to make them fun loving pets and lovebirds tend to be on the more aggressive side.

  • To me it sounds like they still haevn't settled in.
    If you where kept in a small area..you would be kinda irratated also.
    Once you get the cage well a bigger one yuo should start seeing an imrpovment. And Just because they are Love Birds doesn't mean they will always like the other bird. Normally it's only male and male that fight. So i would make sure that you have a male and a female.
    And if it is a female they are proabably just establishing dominence.
    I wouldn't worry. They will settle in at some point. And if you want them to have babies you have to get a breeder box.
