Pros and cons of a common pleco?

  • I have one and he is a good cleaner,

    but I got him and he was like 2 inches maybe and now he's about 8 or 9 inches, he's so big I can't catch him with the net I have right now. Last time I cleaned the tank he got himself caught in the tube thing I use to take the water out and thats how I got him out.

    They are good algae cleaners
    They look cool
    peaceful good for all community tanks even with aggressive fish.

    Cons
    They grow to be over a foot long
    They poop A LOT!
    They are not very active


    I love plecos they are my favourite fish I have a clown pleco and a Bristle nose. The common pleco is not the best choice for most aquariums. The Bristle nose pleco is a much better choice. They are very active, not shy, LOVE TO CLEAN, only get to be 5 inches.

    BUT the down side to all Plecos is they poop a lot. They are little poop machines. Luckily their poop is not as high in ammonia as say a fish whose diet is only meat. But they do make a mess.


  • Cons - they grow to a huge size and make a lot of mess.

    Other than that, they are great fish, as long as you have a 75gal tank to house them
