Tattoo tip?

  • Hi. I'm getting a tattoo tomorrow that will cost roughly $300, and another in 2 weeks [a portrait], that will cost roughly $600.
Just curious, what would you tip for each of those?

  • No you don't tip for tattoos.

  • it really depends on how good of a job they do. if they do a great job, you obviously want to tip them better than you would if they didn't do such a good job. i only have one tattoo, but i thought the guy did an awesome job, plus he gave me a discount on that tattoo anyway. my tattoo was $80. i tipped him $20... so that was 25%. give him/her what you think he/she deserves, but at the same time, only what you can afford.

  • first off im covered in tats my buddy owns a shop and im buds with every one in there my friend jesse who does my tats gets 50 percent of what the tat cost i always tip twenty bucks or a goodie bag special but instead of you paying for the individual piece you should pay by the hour its normally 100 an hour you get lot more work done like 600 for a portrait damn i have a sleeve that cost 600,so you should never pay by the piece pay by the hour i know a portrait is not gonna take 6 hrs they will jack u everytime when u pay by the piece so id just tell them i want to pay by the hour my whole sleeve maybe took 6 to 9 hrs i know your 2 pieces wont take that long.just a word of advice save money more tats, pay by the hour hope i saved you time and money now wheres my best answer, twenty bux is a good tip for any tat period, this guy talking a hundred must be crazy.

  • I didn't know that you were suppose to tip for a tat. Don't they get the whole amount that you pay them?

  • Gratuity for a tattoo or piercing can't really be determined by the percentage rating most use for tipping a restaurant server. Even ten percent of a $200.00 tattoo would be a very substantial amount just to give as a tip. A tip, instead of a percentage, should be based on (1)how much you can afford and (2)how much you feel it is worth. A $5.00 tip would certainly be accepted more graciously than nothing at all.

    # "To tip an artist...shows that you thought the artwork you just received was well worth what I charged and you were happy enough to add a little. It's not requested and it's not required...The words, 'That's kick ***!' mean alot more to me than any tip." - Biscuit, Firehouse Tattoo

  • I've always tipped. At least 20% is my prefrence, but go with whatever is comfortable for you. I'd consider it an insult to not tip!

  • That will depend on the service rendered. If it is a long sitting I would tip atleast 10%

  • I usually tip them at least $20.00. It helps to cover their costs and they really appreciate it and remember who does and who doesn't.

  • I used to be manager at a tattoo and piercing shop...and yes... the artists make only a percentage of the money that you give them. Especially if it's not their shop ( then they have to rent out the tattooing space) Tipping the artist is very important. Some artists remember their non-tipping customers ( I've seen some badddd things) and do not take the time or effort during a repete visit. I think you should take usually 20% percent to tip .. or at least that's my philosphy. Considering that the guys in my shop only got 50% of their weekly totals. Hope this helps!

  • I don't understand why anyone wouldn't tip???? The artist is putting permanent art on your body. This to me is way more important than the waiter, who I will probably never see again, bringing me food. We always tip 20%. Trust me - if you like your artist it is to your advantage to tip well. They remember......
Tattoos are expensive. If you can't afford to tip, wait until you can!

  • At LEAST 10% is expected. 15-20%, if your tattoo artist does a really great job, and you have a pleasurable (as much as you can) experience.

So, I would say, $45 and $90 respectively.

  • I would tip the normal 10-20% based upon how well the guy (or gal) does thier job with the tat... If they do a crummy assed job, and are rude, then you know, just pay what their fee is, etc... But I'd have at least an extra 40-60 on me for the first tat and another 100 on for the second...

and you know, I don't know if this is customary... but I'd say that if you gave him 10% for the good job when you get it done, and your really happy, I dont' think they'll complain if you give an extra tip a week later once the crap has healed and you knwo that it truely is a good tat (sometimes they don't stick well, for no other way to say it)...

  • tip what you feel they deserve. artists undercharge what they are due, especially when they do a kick*** job. i take care of my guy with good tips for the good work he does. he now offers me deals i can't pass up. take care of them, and they'll take of you.
