Will XBMC meet my needs?

  • Hello everyone,
    I am trying to do as much research on XBMC as i can to see if it meets my needs. Basically i am looking to store ISO files of my dvd's on my PC and be able to stream them to my TV. I looked into getting a TVIX, but i think XBMC might be better (and more affordable).

    There is so much information out here that i fear i might have some of it confused. I am worried about filesize limitations. Right now i rip all my DVD's using dvdshrink, so each one comes out to be a little bit over 4 gigs. I think i read somewhere that i cannot play ISO files that are over 2 gigs, is that correct?

    Thank you in advance.

  • you can stream dvd9 isos/images no problems

  • Thanks guys! I have heard the term DVD9 before, but i'm not totally sure what that is, is that something i am able to make out of dvdshrink, or will i have to get different software?

  • I keep ISOs on my external drive on the PC and stream them all the time. It'll play PAL and NTSC, and any region. And you can set it to try and skip straight to the menu on playback as well.

    I have a few IMG files that play fine, too, but I haven't tried any other image formats.

  • XBMC will play anything but H.264 high-definition video, ....it's all in the online manual :;):

  • dvd5 = 4.7GB (single layer)
    dvd9 = 9~GB (dual layer)

    wikipedia is your friend and so is google

  • Pike's right, and if that's what you want to do, then yep XBMC has you covered, and much much more. I highly recommend you check it out.

  • Dont think I've found much XBMC wont play! :laugh:

    It pretty much blows anything else out of the water media wise...

  • Thanks,
    So since it is able to stream a 9 gig ISO, I can do anything up to that right?

    Thanks again for putting up with my questions.
